Imagine wrapping up a typical Sunday at your beloved local pub, only for your life to be turned upside down a few hours later. For James and Jay Tanner, owners of the Smiths Arms in Foelgastell, this became a harsh reality. After closing their doors one regular night in October 2023, a forgotten basket of cloths spontaneously combusted, engulfing their pub and home in flames.
Awakened by the absence of power, Jay’s investigation led her to discover thick smoke filling their home. Her immediate focus was on their two daughters; together, they safely exited via a window, the darkness of pre-dawn adding to their fright. Outside, the family watched as firefighters battled the inferno. Tragically, their cat, Tigger, wasn’t as fortunate.
“Losing Tigger and everything we’d built over years in moments… it was just surreal,” said James. And as if this wasn’t enough, the Tanners were soon confronted with insurance complications. The estimated rebuild cost of ÂŁ320,000 wasn’t matched by their policy, prompting the tough decision to sell another property to fund the restoration.
Despite setbacks, including a gruelling legal tussle that stretched 18 months, their determination paid off. By June, the Smiths Arms stood ready, welcoming guests with a blend of modern touches and traditional charm. “We could’ve sold the land and moved on, but our hearts were set on restoring what we love,” expressed James.
This wasn’t the only hurdle in their journey; navigating life post-fire while managing another pub, the Abadam Arms in Porthyrhyd, offered temporary reprieve. But now, nearly two years on, the Tanners have returned to their rightful place behind the bar, grateful for their community’s support which made their comeback possible.
“We’ve received so much kindness,” reflected James. “Reopening felt like closing one chapter and starting anew. Despite the heartbreak, the love for our pub and community keeps us going.” 🍻💔
