Meet Sophie Fay, a dedicated NHS nurse from Merseyside who faced the unimaginable when what she thought was a simple leg ache turned out to be a rare form of bone cancer. At just 26, Sophie was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma, a tumour that demanded an above-the-knee amputation. Yet, her indomitable spirit shines through as she bravely adapts to life with a prosthetic leg.
Sophie first noticed an “aching” pain behind her knee in March 2024 after starting with a personal trainer. Initially dismissed as a muscular strain, her symptoms worsened, her leg became swollen, and walking even short distances turned painful. Despite these alarming changes, it took persistent efforts for a correct diagnosis.
After various consultations and an MRI scan, Sophie received the shocking news: a large tumour enveloped her calf. The young nurse braved an amputation in December 2024 and is now learning to embrace her new life, focusing on the positives in her recovery journey. 🙂
