🚧 *Potential Road Chaos Alert in Blaenau Gwent!* 🚧

Big plans are in the works as RWE sets its sights on constructing towering 200m wind turbines between Abertillery and Abersychan. While this green initiative aims to power around 50,000 homes, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on local roads.

Cllr Wayne Hodgins, leader of the independent opposition group, voiced his worries at a recent council meeting. He questioned if developers should be responsible for any road damage during construction. You can imagine the wear and tear with all those materials being transported!

What adds a twist is that this project is classified as a development of national significance (DNS), putting the Welsh Government’s Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) in the driver’s seat, with the council playing a supporting role.
Since last year, Blaenau Gwent planners have expressed concerns about the windfarm’s “negative” impact on the region. And while the public awaits a decision expected by December, it’s crucial to know that the hearing has been postponed, and PEDW will make recommendations based on existing documents.
During discussions, Cllr Lisa Winnett pointed out that PEDW’s decisions will hold significant weight during this process. It was also discussed whether a section 106 agreement could potentially require the developer to contribute towards local community benefits.
Joanne White, development management team leader, ensured that highway impacts have been a focal point of discussions for over 18 months. Helen Hinton, another key figure, mentioned that PEDW usually insists on a condition survey to ensure roads aren’t left in a worse state after construction.
As residents of Blaenau Gwent brace themselves for potential traffic chaos, the spotlight is on developers to ensure the infrastructure can endure this ambitious project.
