The court listened to a harrowing victim impact statement, where the young man revealed the deep impact on his life, including sleep disturbances necessitating medication. The prosecution outlined Jones’s awareness of the victim’s vulnerability due to developmental challenges.

The case also highlighted Jones’s past criminal record, including a conviction from 2005 involving the assault of a young boy in Peterborough. Defence initially claimed the encounter at the bus stop was unplanned, yet acknowledged the victim’s vulnerability.

Judge Huw Rees condemned Jones’s actions, noting a pattern in his offences, and acknowledging this as a specifically targeted attack on a vulnerable individual. Citing the rick posed to the public, Judge Rees sentenced Jones to an extended 13-year sentence, comprising nine years in prison and a further four years on licence.
