Meet Shayne Dawson-Dymond, an inspiring 16-year-old whose resilience is nothing short of remarkable. Despite becoming partially paralysed recently, Shayne is determined not to let this challenge stop him from returning to his passion for sports.

Once a keen horse rider and kayaker, Shayne faced a devastating turn of events after being diagnosed with a benign bone tumour at just six years old. Following its removal and subsequent regular scans, a shadow appeared on his shin bone in April 2024. By November, another benign lesion was found, leading to complications that would change his life.

The young athlete was left in agony, facing excruciating pain and eventually losing sensation in his leg due to compartment syndrome. After multiple operations and a promise that he’ll never regain use of that leg, Shayne’s spirit hasn’t dampened. Adapting to immense changes, Shayne even attempted a kayaking race this summer, only to be sidelined by a severe episode that left him partially paralysed from the shoulder down.
Doctors suspect Shayne has functional neurological disorder, a condition that affects how the brain and body communicate. However, Shayne isn’t backing down. Bit by bit, he’s regaining movement, starting with his head and right side, and he’s optimistic about further recovery.
Working diligently with physiotherapists and the GB Junior Team for Paracanoeing, Shayne’s hunger to return to the water and saddle is stronger than ever. His journey highlights the importance of hope and determination. Shayne’s mum, Claire, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to secure a more adaptable wheelchair with an electric bike attachment, aiming to give Shayne greater independence.
An incredible £3,500 has already been raised toward their £6,000 goal. Claire’s advice is simple yet profound: “Don’t take anything for granted and keep fighting.” Shayne exemplifies this ethos, showing us all how to confront life’s hurdles head-on. Let’s cheer Shayne on as he works tirelessly to reclaim his life and continue doing what he loves! 🌟✨
