Jean Gurrey thought her husband Mark’s grumpiness was just part of his charm. But when the cheerful banter took a darker turn, it turned out to be more sinister. Mark, a 70-year-old avid golfer, had unknowingly been battling a brain tumour.

Jean, reflecting on their life in Chelmsford, Essex, shared, “His good-natured complaining was part of our family fun. But soon his humour grew sharp, his temper short. I chalked it up to age, never dreaming it might be deadly.”

Mark began experiencing mini seizures and hearing phantom music or voices. A CT scan in January 2023 revealed the true culprit: a brain tumour. Despite surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, Mark sadly passed away in February 2024, diagnosed with glioblastoma, a relentless form of the disease.

Jean urges everyone to recognise these subtle signs and is now partnering with Brain Tumour Research to raise awareness and push for investments in kinder treatments. Abridge Golf Club, where Mark loved to play, honoured him by raising over £2,000 for the cause.
Charlie Allsebrook from Brain Tumour Research notes, “Mark’s story is tragically common, with over 100 types of brain tumours complicating treatment. Despite this, advancements are slow. We need more investment.”
