Thinking of getting a dog? 🐶 A seasoned dog behaviourist from Derbyshire, Will Atherton, has shared some vital advice for all potential dog owners. His message? Be brutally honest with yourself when choosing your pet, as making the right choice is key to having a happy, well-behaved companion.

In a recent TikTok, Will stressed that selecting the right breed is crucial. Every dog requires training, leadership, and yes, they all have the potential to become wonderful pets. However, the reality is that not every breed is the right fit for every owner.
For centuries, dogs have been bred for specific tasks—some for hunting, others for herding or simply being the perfect companion. It’s important to acknowledge these traits rather than brush them off. Claiming “it’s never the dog’s fault, it’s always the owner’s” might overlook the natural instincts of certain breeds.

Take, for instance, the loyal Pit Bull and intelligent Border Collie. While both can be incredible companions, they come with their own set of challenges. Pit Bulls might have stronger predatory instincts, while Collies can exhibit intense behavioural traits due to their herding origins.
Will’s point is simple: If you’re eyeing a breed, question whether you have the experience and skills to meet their needs. By doing so, you’ll set yourself—and your future furry friend—up for success. 🏆🐕
