Former bandmember of Oasis pays tribute to Ricky Hatton with touching gesture at Manchester memorial service

Manchester paid a touching tribute today as thousands lined the streets to honour the late boxing legend Ricky Hatton. Among the heartfelt farewells at Manchester Cathedral was Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, who made a moving gesture to his old friend.

Liam, a lifelong friend of Ricky, was spotted gently kissing his hand before touching the sky blue coffin adorned with the Manchester City badge and the words ‘Blue Moon’. This poignant act was a nod to Ricky’s loyalty as a devoted City fan, as well as their deep-rooted friendship.

Following the cathedral service, Ricky’s procession made its way to the Etihad Stadium, allowing one final journey past the home ground of the team he loved. Liam attended the ceremony with his partner Debbie Gwyther and family, paying his respects alongside a host of celebrities and mourners.

Ricky, who was a huge Oasis fan, shared an iconic moment with the Gallagher brothers when they carried his championship belts during his legendary 2008 victory over Paulie Malignaggi in Las Vegas. Just weeks before his untimely passing, Ricky enjoyed attending an Oasis gig in Dublin, calling the experience “unreal”.

Oasis also honoured Ricky at their Wembley Stadium show on 27 September. During their performance of “Live Forever,” a large image of Ricky appeared on screen, and Liam bowed his head in tribute.

The boxing world and Ricky’s friends remain heartbroken over his passing on September 14 at the age of 46. Liam expressed his sorrow on social media, writing: “Absolutely devastated to hear the news about RICKY HATTON it was an absolute honour to know him and carry his belts RIP CHAMP LIVE FOREVER LG x”.

Noel Gallagher shared a touching memory of Ricky, recalling his friend’s warm spirit and humour: “He was wisecracking with everyone, always the life of the party. Ricky was one of us—a great Mancunian.”
