Wrexham’s rising star, Lewis O’Brien, shares his admiration for football legend Wayne Rooney after working under him at DC United. Despite some challenging managerial stints, Rooney’s influence remains strong, as O’Brien recalls his excitement about joining the Manchester United icon. It all began back in March 2023 when Rooney, at the time managing DC United, snapped up O’Brien on loan from Nottingham Forest after another move fell through.
Why did O’Brien make the leap to play in the MLS? Simply put, it was Rooney’s aura and managerial promise. O’Brien recalls, “As soon as I knew he wanted me, it was a no-brainer. If anyone’s going to make you a better midfielder, it’s Rooney.” The fire and passion Rooney brought to training left a lasting impression on him. Rooney’s hands-on approach and tactical insights were a huge drawing card for the young midfielder.
Now, O’Brien is thriving at Wrexham, having made a permanent move after stints at various clubs, including Middlesbrough and Swansea City. With three goals to his name this season, he feels at home in North Wales and is making a significant impact under Phil Parkinson’s management.
Reflecting on his journey, O’Brien says, “I always wanted somewhere to call home. After four loans, Wrexham just felt right.” He’s currently enjoying regular playing time, something he struggled with at Forest.
Rooney, meanwhile, parted ways with DC United after the 2023 season and has since faced more rocky managerial positions. Yet, O’Brien’s experience reflects the indelible mark Rooney left as a tactician and motivator.
