Meet Dr. Rachael Barlow, a shining example of resilience! This Cardiff mum-of-two has spent over 30 years working for the NHS, dedicating her life to patient care. But in 2012, her world turned upside down when she found a lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite being told her future was bleak, Rachael’s determination was unwavering. She embraced exercise as a daily ritual, even during gruelling chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy. And just one month after her treatment ended, she trekked an astonishing 19,340 ft up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Cardiff’s Velindre Hospital!

But there’s more to her incredible journey. Rachael’s miraculous recovery — deemed a ‘one-in-a-million’ response by her doctors — inspired her to ensure other cancer patients benefit from exercise and wellness support. She’s the passionate clinical lead for the innovative Prehab2Rehab programme at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

Prehab2Rehab aims to boost patients’ physical and mental fitness before cancer treatment to help them recover better and faster. And it’s working! Patients who engaged with this programme spent three fewer days in hospital post-surgery, freeing up precious NHS resources and improving lives. Plus, it equips them with the tools for lasting lifestyle changes. Since its start in 2021, over 3,000 people have benefited.
For Rachael, exercise isn’t just a recovery tool. It’s a lifestyle. She regularly runs, plays tennis, and enjoys daily walks with her dog, Bella. Her message is clear: Every cancer patient should know the power of fitness during such a challenging time.
Her story is a reminder that even when life takes unexpected turns, you can reclaim control and find new strengths. Whether climbing mountains or making strides in healthcare, Rachael is proof that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible. 🌟🏔️ #Inspiration #CancerSurvivor #HealthMatters
