💥 A massive sinkhole in Merthyr Tydfil has been making waves since it opened up last December! This gigantic crater, big enough to swallow double-decker buses, appeared on Nant Morlais, Pant, and had 30 families rushing from their homes. Now, nearly a year and £4m later, the enormous engineering task to fix it is nearing completion. 🚧

🏗️ The ground gave way after a storm washed debris through a century-old culvert, causing chaos on the street and even catching the attention of American news! Since then, teams have been hard at work filling the void with over 300 tonnes of concrete and 3,000 tonnes of stone. It’s been no small feat—think of it as building a fortress underground!

👷 According to the site manager, it’s the biggest engineering project in south Wales this year. Crews had to construct a ‘metal box’ inside the hole for safety, using state-of-the-art steel and concrete. They’ve come a long way from the old bricks and stone!

🏚️ Families displaced by the sinkhole were temporarily housed in hotels and Airbnbs but managed to return home for Christmas thanks to temporary repairs. Now, the permanent fix is on track for mid-November completion.
