Former Scotland captain Stuart Hogg is under fire after attempting to justify his abusive actions towards his ex-wife, Gillian. Hogg, who now plays for Montpellier, admitted to shouting, swearing, and sending distressing messages to her, alongside tracking her movements over a span of five years. Convicted of domestic abuse last year, Hogg attributed his behaviour to struggles with alcohol and anti-depressants, leading many to criticise him for seemingly minimising his actions.

Hogg, a celebrated player with 100 caps for Scotland and three tours with the British & Irish Lions, avoided jail time but was handed a year-long community payback order and a five-year ban on contacting his ex-wife. Since his split from Gillian, he has moved on with jockey and TV presenter Leonna Mayor, with whom he welcomed a child this February.

In a candid interview with The Rugby Paper, Hogg explained he retired briefly to save a failing marriage. He confessed, “I didn’t know who I was, up to my eyeballs in anti-depressants… I used alcohol to escape.”

This self-reflection hasn’t sat well with all, particularly Scottish Women’s Aid. Dr. Marsha Scott of the charity stated, “Domestic abuse is always a choice… Attempting to minimise such behaviour publicly can be harmful.”

However, Hogg insists he’s working towards becoming a better person: “I’m learning to be selfless for my kids, my partner, my team… I’ve found peace.”

Recently, a court allowed communication between Hogg and Gillian via a co-parenting app, offering a glimmer of hope for improved family relations. Hogg shared, “The hope is my kids can visit me in France… I live near Montpellier, five minutes from the beach… Things are improving.”
