Been caught by a speed camera lately? You’re not alone! There’s been a 12% spike in penalty points slapped on drivers’ licences across the UK. Last year, drivers collected a whopping 9.61 million points, a significant rise from the 8.55 million the year before, and it doesn’t look like slowing down.

Speeding continues to be the top traffic offence, especially on public roads and motorways. A lot of drivers usually face a £100 fine and three penalty points. For some, there’s an option to dodge the points by attending a speed awareness course. However, many repeat offenders can’t benefit from this, having already been on a course within the last three years.

AA president Edmund King finds this surge “worrying” and attributes it to soaring speed camera offences. Believe it or not, cameras sniffed out 96% of speeding offences in England and Wales last year alone!

It seems folks in the South West are being hit hardest, getting 51 points per 1,000 people, which is the highest regional rate. Meanwhile, Londoners are sitting at the lowest rate with only 35.2 points per 1,000 people.

Got more than 12 points in three years? Watch out—you might face a six-month driving ban. Besides a potential fine, more points on your licence can also mean steeper insurance premiums.

Paul Evans from Co-op Insurance suggests drivers should be cautious and ensure they’re insured to dodge hefty penalties and help keep our roads safer.
