🚗💷 Big Cars, Big Costs: Cardiff’s New Parking Surcharge 🚗💷

Attention Cardiff car owners! Cardiff Council is shaking things up with a new parking plan to tackle commuter congestion and boost sustainable travel. But there’s a twist — if you drive a large vehicle, you might soon see a surcharge labeled the unofficial “Land Rover tax.”
Why? The council aims to cut down on city space taken by large vehicles, pushing for smaller, eco-friendlier choices. This means if your vehicle has a revenue weight over 2,400kg, you’ll feel the impact. And it’s not just aimed at traditional SUVs; some electric cars are included too. Here are a few models that could be affected:

🔹2025 Skoda Enyaq (electric) – 2,650kg
🔹2025 BMW iX (electric) – 2,703kg
🔹2024 Audi Q4 e-tron (electric) – 2,660kg
🔹2022 Range Rover D350 – 2,504kg
🔹2024 Land Rover Discovery – 2,529kg
Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2) compliant vehicles escape this extra charge, which otherwise hits diesel cars harder for emitting more pollutants.
Councillor Dan De’Ath explains the move aims to challenge big, “American-style” SUVs citing road safety concerns, especially regarding pedestrian risks. He comments that a child’s danger increases significantly in incidents involving these larger cars.
So, what’s next? Cardiff Council is fine-tuning permit costs, to be noted in an upcoming Traffic Regulation Order process, and promises biennial reviews. Still curious? Find your car’s revenue weight via the DVLA site and stay ahead of the changes!
