🌟 A Story of Strength: From Rib Pain to Lung Cancer 🌟
Lisa Gillies, a 53-year-old former cleaner from Salisbury, faced a life-altering shock when what she thought was rib pain from exhausting 60-hour workweeks was diagnosed as stage four lung cancer. Initially mistaking her symptoms for tiredness due to her demanding job, Lisa was devastated to learn that her condition had spread, resulting in 11 brain tumours.
Despite the diagnosis, Lisa’s resilience shines through. Thanks to treatment targeting a genetic mutation common in non-smokers, her primary lung tumour has shrunk significantly, and her brain metastases have disappeared. However, with time, this treatment might lose its effectiveness.
Lisa and her daughter, Taylor, now have their sights set on raising funds for private specialist treatment. This includes a potential lung wedge resection – a procedure not yet commonly available in the NHS due to funding constraints. The surgery could help prolong Lisa’s life by removing the main tumour and checking for other mutations.
Reflecting on her journey, Lisa shared, “I was one of those who thought you could only get lung cancer if you smoked. It’s made me realise life is short, and you have to enjoy every moment.”
