A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in West Yorkshire where 13-year-old Qudsiyah Mahmood tragically took her life during a walk with her father at Baitings Reservoir. Struggling with her sexuality and gender identity, and experiencing poor mental health, Qudsiyah’s sad departure has left a community in mourning.
On that fateful day, Qudsiyah asked her father, who’s in ill-health, to take her to the picturesque reservoir, a favourite spot they frequently visited. Promising to excel in her upcoming exams, they set out, but this outing would end in sorrow. After taking some photos, Qudsiyah slipped away from her dad’s side and entered the water. A witness recalled her entering without hesitation, turning what was first assumed to be an accident into a confirmed heartbreaking suicide.
This revelation emerged after social media messages suggested Qudsiyah was battling with issues around her gender and religion, feeling confusion about being genderfluid and agnostic. Friends disclosed these messages to the police, helping to piece together the events leading to her death.
Qudsiyah, remembered by her peers and teachers as a “bright, kind, and friendly” girl, attended Crossley Heath in Halifax. Her headteacher mourned the loss, describing her as someone who brought brightness to their school days.
The family, unaware of the depth of her struggles, shared heartfelt sentiments, believing they would have been supportive of her. This tragic event serves as a sombre reminder of the importance of mental health conversations and the supportive roles family and community can play.
