Ukrainian Hub Cymru Wales has just turned a potential setback into an exciting new chapter! Starting out in 2022 as a humanitarian lifeline, this incredible initiative faced a nerve-racking challenge earlier this year. Their hub at Cardiff’s Capitol Centre was due for redevelopment, giving them just 28 days to relocate. Helen McAdie, one of the founders, described the urgency as a moment of déjà vu, mirroring the displacement struggles faced by many of their Ukrainian friends and families.
But sometimes, community spirit shines the brightest in challenging times! After a whirlwind of meetings and calls, they found a new home at St Andrews Crescent, still conveniently in the city centre. With crucial support from the National Lottery Community Fund and Monmouthshire Building Society, they’ve secured this new space for two years, complete with fresh flooring ready for the vibrant activities they’re known for.
Helen expressed overwhelming relief and gratitude towards everyone who extended a helping hand. The transformation of the space, marked by a special plaque unveiled by First Minister Eluned Morgan, is more than just a physical move. It celebrates the incredible journey from a grassroots response to a flourishing hub of hope and resilience. The opening event was a testament to this spirit, filled with dance, song, and the joyful noise of children celebrating their culture in both Welsh and Ukrainian.
With this new beginning, the Ukrainian Hub Cymru Wales continues its mission to support Ukrainians in building new lives while enriching the cultural tapestry of Wales.
