Excitement and anticipation are in the air for Bridgend’s new Heronsbridge Special School. The much-anticipated multi-million-pound facility is set to be one of the finest in the country, but there’s a bit of a wait! Initially slated for completion in the 2026-27 academic year, the opening has now been pushed to autumn 2028.

Why the delay? Rising construction costs have impacted the project, prompting Bridgend Council to extend the timeline. At the latest cabinet meeting, Cllr Martyn Jones explained that the new timeframe allows for essential design developments and ground investigations at the Island Farm site. It also coincides with restrictions linked to this year’s Senedd elections.

This delay ensures all involved can focus on making the Heronsbridge relocation as seamless as possible. Both the Headteacher and Governing Body have voiced their support for the revised date, emphasising a smooth transition.

Once completed, the new school promises to be a beacon of educational excellence. More places for pupils with additional learning needs, and facilities like a swimming pool, library, and coffee shop, are in the plans. The chosen site, steeped in history, once hosted a WWII prison of war camp, lending an intriguing backdrop to this modern development.
Despite the extended timeline, there’s palpable excitement for the future of Heronsbridge School. Leaders are confident that the wait will be worth it. As they say, good things come to those who wait! 🌟🏫
