Tragic news has emerged about a young man from Wigan, Patrick Liam Coyle, who sadly passed away shortly after being discharged from a mental health hospital. Patrick, 27, pleaded with hospital staff not to send him home, but was released after they assessed him as being safe.
Three days post-discharge, on March 7th, Patrick returned to A&E seeking readmission, desperately needing help. Despite expressing no immediate plans of self-harm, he was sent home, only to be found dead in his flat a few days later.
The recent inquest revealed that Patrick had been struggling with mental health issues and alcohol dependency for some time, factors that contributed significantly to his deterioration. He had previously undergone a lengthy inpatient stay, and his family said he didn’t want to leave hospital care. The coroner highlighted how Patrick’s mental wellness declined rapidly after discharge, leading to excessive alcohol and medication use.
Support workers visited him at home, but tragically, plans for ongoing care the following week came too late. Patrick’s story is a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health care and the importance of timely intervention.
