A former government scientist, Dr. Llion Evans, aged 41, found himself facing Cardiff Crown Court after attempting to engage in inappropriate communication with someone he thought was a 12-year-old girl. In reality, he was messaging an undercover police officer. Using the alias “Jimbo Jones,” Evans spoke disturbingly about wanting to shower with the child.

During a search of Evans’ home, police discovered more than 350 indecent images on his devices, including distressing material involving children and babies. Some images found were categorized as the most severe kind, with Evans even sharing a few within a Kik group chat.

Initially making contact via a Kik profile supposedly belonging to a young girl from Newport, Evans’ actions unfolded between July and October 2023. Despite some chats not being sexual, his intentions turned dark, leading to his arrest after devices were seized and thoroughly examined.

Represented by Nicola Powell in court, it was revealed that Evans, a highly educated man and father of two, had no prior convictions. However, his career and personal life have been greatly affected, with his marriage ending amidst these revelations. He has been engaging in voluntary rehabilitation efforts and is undergoing an assessment for autism, which remains incomplete.

Despite his guilty plea and expression of regret, Judge Vanessa Francis branded Evans’ actions as “utterly reprehensible,” resulting in a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Additionally, he must complete 80 hours of unpaid community work and a rehabilitation activity requirement. Evans will also be listed on the sex offender register for a decade and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.

This shocking case is a harsh reminder of the importance of online safety and vigilance. Stay informed and stay safe!
