A family is in mourning after the tragic loss of Danielle Haggerty, a vibrant and loving 33-year-old who tragically passed away after being found alone in a flat. Danielle’s brother, Jonathan Haggerty, is leading a heartfelt campaign to introduce “Danielle’s Law.” The law aims to make it a criminal offence to leave someone in immediate danger without seeking help. Jonathan hopes this will prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Danielle, a trained hairdresser and adored aunt from Ashton-under-Lyne, was in a relationship marked by volatility, according to an inquest. She was found unconscious after a neighbour alerted police about a disturbance. Despite being resuscitated, she suffered irreversible brain damage and passed away days later.
An investigation followed, but no charges were filed. Jonathan passionately believes introducing a ‘duty to rescue’ law, similar to those in other countries, could save lives. His petition has already gained significant support, nearing 9,000 signatures. He feels that immediate action in such situations is critical – a simple phone call can be a lifeline.
Jonathan recalls his sister as a “happy, bubbly person” who was incredibly thoughtful, from surprising family with fish and chips to her love for Elvis. Despite their loss, the family finds solace in knowing Danielle’s organ donation saved three lives.
This is the fourth tragedy to hit the family over a decade, with Jonathan losing another brother and sister to suicide, and another sibling in an accident. Despite the pain, Jonathan is driven to make a change, gathering support from other families and his local MP, Angela Rayner. She is working with him to bring attention to this cause and help prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak. “Danielle’s Law” could be a monumental step in ensuring vulnerable individuals are protected and timely help is given.
