Disabled individuals rely on this scheme, which allows them to exchange their mobility allowance for leased vehicles, insurance, and maintenance—all without upfront payments for most models. These changes, however, will refocus on providing cars that are more necessity-driven and cost-effective.
While BMW expressed disappointment, they are committed to ensuring current customers receive their orders promptly. On the other hand, Mercedes has yet to comment. It’s worth noting that Mini, though owned by BMW, won’t be affected by this shift.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has signalled these alterations as part of a broader strategy to keep these benefits grounded in reality, reflecting what most working households can actually afford. The aim? To redirect taxpayer money towards vehicles that genuinely meet the needs of the disabled community while representing value for money.
This overhaul also shines a light on rising concerns about the programme’s costs and increased demand, with record government funding of £2.8 billion injected into the scheme last year amid a surge in applications.
Despite the scrutiny, Andrew Miller, the chief executive, defends Motability, emphasising its vital role in offering freedom and independence to disabled individuals. He also highlights a commitment to boost British car manufacturing, which has the potential to drive economic growth and support skilled jobs across the country.
