🚗🔍 Attention Drivers: Are Ghost Number Plates Driving You Mad? 🚔👻

A new report warns that a growing number of drivers are using sneaky ‘ghost’ number plates to dodge speed cameras. These dodgy plates can be bought online for just £30, and to the naked eye, they look perfectly normal. But due to their reflective tricks, they become invisible to infrared speed cameras. Shocking, right?

The Department for Transport is on the case and an official crackdown is expected soon. Industry experts and MPs are pushing for stricter controls on number plate production, as many shady suppliers aren’t following DVLA rules. Even if using these tricksy plates nets you a £100 fine, there are no penalty points – a risk some drivers seem all too willing to take.
According to Prof Fraser Sampson, formerly in charge of ANPR tech, the system is not as foolproof as one might think. With around 75 million number plate recognitions daily, errors occur, resulting in innocent drivers sometimes being wrongly fined. To make matters worse, some folks are gaming the system with reflective tape or stealth plates, making these sly tricks disturbingly easy to pull off.
The British government is taking this issue very seriously, recognising its implications for road safety and law enforcement. They’re working with police to improve detection and enforcement of these sketchy practices.
In the meantime, with the lure of skipping fines and avoiding detection in low-emission zones, some drivers are reaping short-term gains, but is it worth the long-term risk? Stay tuned for the government’s upcoming announcement detailing new road safety strategies and policies.
