An intense courtroom drama unfolded when Huw Young, 57, was sentenced for the shocking abuse of his partner, driven by jealousy. It all began when Young discovered messages from male friends on his partner’s phone. Overcome with rage, he smashed her phone and warned, “The only way to get to you is to smash your phone up.”

Young’s violent behaviour didn’t stop there. He repeatedly strangled his partner, first in 2024, and later in May of this year, during a series of harrowing incidents that left her fearing for her life. After each attack, he threatened her, saying, “If you call the police, I will seriously beat you bad before they get to you.” Despite his threats, the brave victim called the authorities, leading to Young’s arrest and conviction.

At Cardiff Crown Court, Young admitted to intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and criminal damage. Sentenced to three years, Young was also slapped with a restraining order, offering his victim some relief after the nightmare.
In court, the victim spoke of how the ordeal shattered her confidence and trust in people, rendering her unsure of whom to believe. Young’s courtroom apology was overshadowed by grim details of his past offence—grabbing an ex-partner by the neck. Despite everything, Young’s lawyer argued that his client’s spiraling alcohol use after losing his job clouded his judgment.
Judge Carl Harrison expressed zero tolerance for Young’s violent acts, clearly marking the line against domestic abuse.
