Wrexham’s dynamic duo, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, may be loved by fans worldwide, but they don’t mess about when it comes to club business. Wrexham boss, Phil Parkinson, has been warned to stay on his toes, as these Hollywood heavyweights are known for their no-nonsense approach.

Under Parkinson’s guidance since July 2021, Wrexham has climbed from the National League to the Championship, notching up three successive promotions. However, their recent unbeaten run came crashing down with a 2-0 loss to Hull on Wednesday. Despite this, the Red Dragons sit 14th in the table, just four points shy of the play-offs—a commendable feat acknowledged by many, including former Premier League midfielder, Jobi McAnuff.

Still, McAnuff urges caution, noting that Reynolds and McElhenney won’t hesitate to make tough decisions if results falter. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 72+ podcast, he said, “Phil has done an astounding job, but the pressure is on. One bad run, and they might start looking for fresh blood—that’s just how it goes. They’ve been decisive with players, and managers aren’t an exception.”
Noteworthy player changes this past summer saw star players Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer exit, signalling that nobody is untouchable. Even with a rocky start in the Championship and whispers about Parkinson’s future, the board quickly silenced any rumours, backing their coach.
After the Hull defeat, Parkinson expressed disappointment but vowed to bounce back: “We didn’t hit our stride tonight, and it’s not often I say that. We’ll regroup and aim higher next weekend.”
Wrexham’s journey is followed by fans worldwide, thanks to the popularity of Disney+’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. As the team pushes on, Parkinson will undoubtedly be striving to prove he’s still very much the right man steering this football fairy tale.
