Big news for second homeowners in Pembrokeshire! The council voted to lower the second homes council tax premium from a hefty 200% to 150% above the standard rate. This means those with second homes will pay less on their council tax bills from next year.

The decision, reached by just a single vote, is set to impact many in the area, where second homes, holiday lets, and empty properties make up 13.8% of the housing market. This is particularly notable in areas like Dale and Lamphey, where over 40% of homes fall into these categories.

What does that mean for residents? The council faced a tough choice, as a smaller premium equals less cash in the council’s budget—£2.8 million less, to be exact. Some wanted the premium dropped even further to 100%, but this was rejected.

Cllr Jon Harvey warned that further cuts would mean finding the missing millions elsewhere—possibly leading to higher general council tax or budget cuts. Cllr Mike Stoddart argued that it’s “unfair” to charge double, especially when some use fewer services.
After much debate, the final decision to maintain the 150% rate was reached, with a backup plan from Cllr Phil Kidney to reduce it to 125% passed by the skin of its teeth—by only one vote!
With the empty property rate staying at a hefty 300%, the conversation around property taxes and fair contributions continues. How do you feel about these changes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! ✨🏡
