A drama unfolded when inmate Dean Doran, 40, walked out of an open prison in Usk, Monmouthshire, without any permission. As if that wasn’t enough, he threatened a prison officer who confronted him by making a gun gesture and chillingly told her, “You are getting shot, you are dead.”

Doran, who was serving a sentence for possession of a bladed article, shoplifting, and a public order offence since June, was supposed to be at HMP Prescoed. This open facility allows inmates some freedoms like applying for jobs and leaving on licence, but Doran didn’t have the green light to leave.

The tense moment happened on July 28 at around 7.30pm when the officer spotted him and asked why he was outside. Doran tried to claim mistaken identity, but the officer smartly captured his photo and alerted the prison. Doran was found shortly after in Usk Road.

In court, Doran admitted escaping from custody. Despite his lengthy record, his lawyer noted he hadn’t committed further crimes during his brief time at large. Judge Rhys Rowlands sentenced him to an additional 21 weeks, running alongside his current sentence.
