The upcoming reforms aim to make our roads safer, particularly as road accident casualties have surged by 20% with 28,000 serious injuries reported last year—the highest since 2007. Under the new proposals, you might face stricter penalties for seatbelt violations, and the drink-drive limit in England and Wales is set to be tightened to match Scotland’s limit of 22 micrograms.
For the silver-haired motorists, a failed eye test might mean it’s time to hand over the keys. Currently, older drivers self-report their fitness to drive, but new mandatory eye exams could become the gold standard. There might also be medical tests to catch conditions like dementia early on.
But that’s not all—drivers could also face tougher rules for drug-driving with admissible roadside saliva tests, and get hit with criminal charges for driving uninsured. The government is determined to crack down on those dodgy number plates that cameras struggle to read.
A government insider stated, “With someone getting killed or seriously injured on our roads every 18 minutes, the impact on families is devastating. We can’t afford to do nothing.”
