Nick, 33, from Gloucester, is passionate about customer service, and despite his obstacles, he keeps pursuing his dream. His latest job in a restaurant ended when his brain injury led him to innocently ask colleagues if they were “cuddle buddies” or calling a helpful co-worker “good girl.” He feels it’s unfair when employers fail to communicate his condition to their staff, which results in unnecessary issues.
After years of demonstrating his talents and welcoming spirit in the hospitality industry, Nick hopes to spread awareness about his experience. Living with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) has affected his expression, but he remains determined. Experts point out that brain injuries can cause disinhibition, mood swings, and personality changes, making it essential for workplaces to adapt and educate staff accordingly.
Supported by Headway Gloucestershire, Nick advocates for greater understanding of brain injuries and how they impact people differently. His mum, Ann, wishes for more employers to appreciate Nick’s abilities and offer the compassion he deserves.
Currently, Nick lends a helping hand at his local pub, The Imperial Inn, whenever possible. As he continues his job search, Nick is hopeful for a future where his skills are recognised, and he finds an employer who values inclusivity and understanding.
