🌊 Sad News from Gower Beach 🌊

A rare and majestic sight turned into heartbreak at Llangennith Beach. On Monday, a young long-finned pilot whale, typically found in the North Atlantic, was discovered washed up during low tide. This incredible creature, under 12 months old, attracted both concerned locals and rescue teams. As brave souls attempted to revive her by splashing water, it was sadly too late.

Local coastguard volunteer, Mark Button, shared, “We were alerted about a whale on the beach, and rushed to help. Unfortunately, it passed before we arrived.” This marks the first-ever sighting of a long-finned pilot whale in the Gower, a region more accustomed to dolphins and basking sharks.
After being retrieved by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), plans are underway for a post mortem to understand more about this unexpected visit. These whales are sociable and loyal, often travelling in pods with family. Due to this, there’s a gentle warning for locals to keep an eye out for any others possibly drawn to shore.
