If you’ve passed by the junction of Cathedral Road and Cowbridge Road East recently, you might have seen it already—construction is in full swing! A once-busy part of Cardiff city centre is getting a major facelift, sparked by plans to bring new flats and retail space to life. 🏗️

Cardiff Latest News
The project, originally green-lit by Cardiff Council in 2023, plans for 81 new flats along with some commercial spaces. But not everyone’s on board. The original plan included a stipulation to keep the commercial spaces smaller to support local shops. However, developers requested to remove this condition, hoping to open doors for a big supermarket. 🛒

This caused a bit of a stir among local councillors—while some say a new supermarket would be a boon, others worry it might overshadow independent businesses that make Cardiff unique. The debate came to a head in January 2025 when the council shot down the revised plan, although an appeal is currently in the works.

Despite the ongoing discussions, the project is moving forward! The old terraces have been levelled, paving the way for this controversial but exciting change. 🚜🏠
