👩⚕️ Unacceptable Behaviour Alert: A former doctor at Withybush General Hospital in Pembrokeshire has been struck off the medical register. Dr Velmurugan Kuppuswamy, who qualified in 1996, faced serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving junior female colleagues, prompting a tribunal to take decisive action.
Between August and September 2021, Dr Kuppuswamy engaged in inappropriate actions, including unwanted physical contact and making disturbing comments. These actions were found to be part of a broader pattern of sexually motivated misconduct.
During a party at the hospital, he suggested female colleagues “use their chests as ping-pong paddles,” and encouraged them to dance provocatively for him. Such behaviour was not only unprofessional but deeply unsettling for those around him. The tribunal described his behaviour as predatory and noted his failure to recognise the power imbalance between him and his junior colleagues.
Despite Dr Kuppuswamy’s insistence that his actions were historical and unrelated to patient care, the tribunal ruled that his misconduct was severe and not easily remediable. His alleged apology was seen as insincere, further justifying the decision to erase him from the medical register.
