Heads up, future students and current scholars in Wales! From 2026 onwards, university tuition fees will see yearly hikes matching inflation. This move follows England’s footsteps and aims to support our educational institutions during tough times.

Education Minister Vikki Howells has confirmed that fees for 2026/27 will mirror those set in England. This applies to all students studying in Wales, no matter where they’re originally from. Don’t fret though, tuition fee loans for Welsh students will increase too!

In a bit of good news, maintenance grants are set to rise by 2% for the first time since 2018. This will be a welcome boost for eligible students, ensuring that Wales continues to offer the UK’s most generous support for living costs to undergrads. Postgraduate and part-time students aren’t left behind either, with similar increases coming their way.

The fee rise comes as universities face a challenging financial climate, dealing with a collective deficit over £77m. These changes will mean the third annual fee cap increase, crucial for providing significant revenue to keep our unis afloat.

But don’t worry! While fees are going up, it’s all about sustainability and maintaining quality education. Upfront payment won’t change, nor will this affect your monthly loan repayments once you’ve graduated. Got questions? Your university is the best place to get answers!
