Ilona Kazik, a “beautiful, fun, and intelligent” first-time mum, tragically passed away due to a severe brain bleed just days after welcoming her baby boy, Antony, into the world. Her journey to motherhood was a long one, as she and her husband Rafal spent five years trying for a child. Ilona, who worked in healthcare, was diagnosed with high blood pressure right before giving birth.
Despite treatment, her condition rapidly worsened following the caesarean delivery at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. Complaining of headaches and blurred vision shortly after, she was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where she sadly didn’t recover.
Rafal, left to care for their newborn, Antony, is devastated and seeking answers. He’s urged hospital officials to clarify the circumstances that led to Ilona’s untimely death. “Ilona was a loving person, full of joy and creativity,” he shared. “It’s heartbreaking she never got to hold Antony.”
The upcoming inquest will hopefully provide the clarity and closure needed to help the family heal. Rafal’s lawyer emphasized the critical need for understanding this tragedy to improve maternity safety.
