A pile of old mattresses and sofas was found dumped along a Cardiff road, leading to a hefty penalty for a local resident. Antonio Borg, 63, from Splott, is facing nearly £2000 in fines after being identified as the person responsible for this unsightly mess in Rumney. Cardiff Magistrates’ Court didn’t just stop there; Borg also received a 12-month driving ban due to his reckless disposal of waste.

This all unfolded after Cardiff Council’s waste enforcement officers received reports in May 2023 about a chaotic pile of beds, sofas, and bags of household and building waste in Spring Meadows Road. Amongst the rubbish, officers found evidence linking Borg to a property in Barry, proving he was behind the illegal dumping.

Borg’s penalties include a £1,080 fine, £486.65 in costs, and a £432 Victim Surcharge. This case serves as a strong reminder that fly-tipping carries serious consequences for those who flout the law.
