π¨ Watch out! Scammers have been caught posing as police officers, targeting elderly men in Cardiff. These fraudsters had a young courier, Nawaf Abdullahi, pick up cash from unsuspecting victims. In a shocking scam, they convinced two elderly men to hand over thousands, thinking they were aiding a police investigation. π‘

The 20-year-old Abdullahi traveled from London to Cardiff, visiting the homes of two men, aged 80 and 78, and made off with bundles of cash totalling Β£16,000 from each. He then briskly returned to London to drop off the money near Kings Cross. But the clever smarts of one victim helped crack the case. Becoming suspicious, the 78-year-old sought advice from HSBC’s fraud centre and didn’t hand over any money. His vigilance paid off, leading to Abdullahi’s arrest at Cardiff Central railway station. π

During police questioning, Abdullahi admitted his actions, saying he had no idea what was in the packages. He claimed to have been involved in similar pickups in other cities, like Oxford and Portsmouth, driven by “hostile” employers. However, he also expressed remorse for his actions and the distress caused to his family. With no prior convictions, Abdullahi pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess criminal property. ποΈ
The court recognised his potential for rehabilitation. Consequently, Judge Paul Hobson sentenced him to a 15-month term in a young offenders institute, suspended for 18 months, coupled with 100 hours of unpaid work. This case highlights how crucial it is to stay alert and question unusual requests, no matter who they claim to be. Always check with a trusted authority source if you feel uneasy or suspicious. Let’s keep each other safe! ππͺ
