A tragic incident unfolded as a van driver, unaware he had hit a cyclist, thought his engine had exploded. The horrific crash, which occurred on the A31 near Runfold, claimed the life of 40-year-old cyclist Aran Potkin. The driver, Matthew Marston, was found 800 meters from the scene, puzzled and asking, “What’s happened?” CCTV and phone data revealed Marston was using his mobile at the time, despite the cyclist being visible for 200 meters in his bright clothing.

Aran’s wife, Poppy, shared heartfelt words about her beloved husband and the impact of losing him. She said that she and their children feel “homesick,” with the home they miss being Aran himself. Aran was remembered as a loving, fun, and humble man, qualities making his loss even more painful.

Facing the harsh reality of the consequences of distracted driving, Marston pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to nine years in prison. He also faces a 13-year driving ban and will have to pass an extended test to regain his licence.
This tragic event is a stark reminder of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving and the devastating effects it can have on lives and families. Let’s remember Aran and hold his family in our thoughts. Stay safe on the roads, everyone.
