ππ Oh no! A shocking incident has unfolded in Shotton Colliery, County Durham, as the village’s beloved Christmas tree, standing strong for over a decade, was cut down in the dark of night. Just hours after the festive lights were switched on, this act of vandalism has left the community heartbroken.

Two men have been arrested in connection with this incident. A 26-year-old man is facing potential charges of criminal damage and remains in custody, while a 23-year-old has been released under investigation. The tree wasn’t just a festive decoration but a cherished memorial for First World War soldiers, making the impact of its loss even more personal for the villagers.
Steve Maitland from the Shotton Residents Association shared his disappointment, calling it “mindless vandalism” and expressing the community’s deep attachment to the tree. With some of the original fundraisers having passed away, the loss feels even more poignant.

In a show of resilience, locals are already rallying to restore what was lost. Plans to create a sleeve for the tree’s base aim to get it back up before Christmas, symbolising the community’s spirit of togetherness despite this unfortunate event.
PC David Allan of the Peterlee Neighbourhood Police Team assured the public that the matter is being taken very seriously and there will be robust action against those responsible.
Letβs hope the community can swiftly reclaim their festive spirit and that justice is served. πβ¨ #ShottonColliery #CommunitySpirit #ChristmasTree
