Tragedy strikes this Christmas as two swimmers remain missing off the Devon coast. On Christmas morning at Budleigh Salterton, emergency services sprang into action when a festive swim turned perilous. While others were rescued and medically assessed, two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 60s, couldn’t be located. Despite tireless efforts by coastguard and RNLI crews, the search was halted on Thursday evening, leaving families eagerly awaiting news.

Exmouth and Beer Coastguard Rescue Teams, along with RNLI lifeboats and helicopters, scoured the seas. Unfortunately, the rough conditions, compounded by a severe weather warning, hampered rescue missions and led to the search being stood down. Officials urge the public to heed safety advice and avoid the water during such dangerous conditions. Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar expressed heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the local community, acknowledging the tragic event’s impact on all involved.
Some Christmas and Boxing Day swims in Devon and Cornwall have already been canceled due to the hazardous weather. While the forecast is set to improve slightly, authorities still strongly discourage swimming on Boxing Day and urge any witnesses or individuals with information to contact 101. Stay safe, and let’s keep those affected in our thoughts.
