Exciting news for Swansea residents! 🎉 Our city is set to receive a boost in funding from Cardiff Bay, meaning more investment into essential services like education and social care. However, while this is great news, a rise in council tax might still be on the horizon.

Swansea Council’s cabinet has just given the green light to a draft budget for 2026-27, and they’re keen to hear what YOU think! The public consultation is now open, so it’s your chance to shape the future of our community before the budget is finalised in March.

Good news in numbers: the expected funding increase from the Welsh Government has risen from 3.4% to 5.2%. Council leader Rob Stewart has expressed optimism, stating that Swansea plans to keep any tax hikes lower than those in other parts of Wales. This approach is aimed at balancing essential service funding with the financial pressures faced by residents.
A significant part of the funding comes from council tax, which last saw a 5.95% rise. While specific figures aren’t yet confirmed, discussions are ongoing to ensure that any increase is manageable, with the priority being the wellbeing of the community.
Some clever financial manoeuvres are on the table! The council has managed to slash its employer pension costs by £16.2 million, a record-saving feat thanks to the impressive growth of the City and County of Swansea Pension Fund. This saving frees up budget space, allowing all council departments to receive more funding, while still needing to find £12.7 million more in savings.
Schools are a top priority – 33p of every pound spent by the council goes towards education, with schools expected to collectively see a net increase of £12.2 million! While challenges remain, there are innovative income-raising ideas like adjusting fees for burials and cremations, alongside savings from anticipated lower energy costs.
Public consultations are open until February 6, so have your say! Let’s work together to ensure Swansea thrives with support and resources while keeping residents’ needs at heart.
