RAF veteran Rob Bugden’s life took an unexpected turn when a parachuting training exercise went horribly wrong. In January 2016, Rob jumped from 5,000 feet, only to collide with another parachutist mid-air. The impact broke his neck and left him paralysed. Despite these life-altering injuries, Rob’s story is one of incredible resilience and positivity.

Living in a specially adapted home in the Vale of Glamorgan, thanks to the RAF Benevolent Fund, Rob has embraced his new reality with determination. Although he’s paralysed from the neck down, with minimal movement in his arms, he hasn’t let this stop him from living life to the fullest. With his trusty companion, Denzel the cocker spaniel/golden retriever cross, by his side, Rob has found joy and companionship in everyday moments.

From needing round-the-clock care to regaining some independence, Rob’s journey over the last decade has been remarkable. He’s managed to reclaim aspects of his life, from learning to feed himself to enjoying outings with friends at the local pub. He jokes about being able to down a bottle of Peroni with no hands in just six seconds!
Rob dearly values the unwavering support of his friends, family, and the RAF Benevolent Fund. They’ve helped transform his home into a dream haven where he can navigate life on his terms. His words of gratitude resonate deeply, as he acknowledges everyone who played a crucial role in his recovery.
Rob’s story is a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity. His tenacity, humour, and sheer willpower make him an inspiration to many. Here’s to Rob, who proves that even when life throws you the toughest challenges, it’s possible to rise above with courage and a smile.
