Once a hub of excitement and cherished memories, Swansea’s Morfa Dry Ski Slope now stands as a haunting reminder of days gone by. Hidden behind the busy Swansea.com Stadium and Morfa Retail Park, this 3.48-acre plot was where beginners and experts once gathered to share the thrill of skiing.

Opening its doors in 1989, Morfa welcomed children on school trips and seasoned skiers alike, offering a taste of the slopes without the travel. The buzz of the Ski Council of Wales race days and those first shaky attempts on skis are all now whispers in the breeze. A pillar of community life, it even had Harold Thomas, a familiar face to generations of winter sports enthusiasts.

Fast forward to 2006, and the slope’s future took a murky turn. Grand plans for Wales’s first indoor ski facility, a restaurant with breathtaking views, and a budget hotel were on the cards but never realised. Overgrown and forgotten, the once-vibrant site became nothing more than an eyesore. Even the hopes of a wooden bicycle track and a drive-through restaurant were lost to time and drainage dilemmas.

In 2021, hope flickered briefly with plans for seven industrial units, but today, the ski slope remains untouched—a silent, muddy hill where memories alone linger. Metal barriers stand guard where skiers once queued, as the site patiently awaits a new chapter.
Will Swansea’s nostalgic icon find new life? Only time will tell. Share your memories of Morfa or thoughts on what its future should hold! ⛷️🏞️
