🌧️ **Flooded Lives and New Beginnings at Clydach Terrace**
Life at Clydach Terrace in Ynysybwl, Wales, is set for a dramatic change. 🏡💔 The street, plagued by relentless flooding, is heading for demolition. Paul Thomas, 66, shares the heartache of parting with his home, likening the experience to losing a limb. After devastating floods during Storm Dennis in 2020 and Storm Bert in 2024, the decision to demolish these at-risk homes was inevitable.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has agreed to purchase and demolish homes 1 to 16 (excluding 6a and 6b). The £2.57 million deal aims to provide a safer, flood-free future for residents. While grateful for the chance to move on, Paul notes the financial and emotional challenges of buying a new property at his age, especially since everything in his house is brand new.
Living with high flood risks isn’t viable anymore. With insurance costs soaring and risks mounting, the idea of staying put is simply impractical. Even a proposed flood defence wall was shot down for its hefty price tag.
“Moving feels like a blessing despite the hurdles,” says Paul. “This isn’t living; it’s just existing.”
Residents have placed sandbags at their doors, hoping to stave off any more water damage as they await documentation to relocate. Yet, amidst the upheaval, a silver lining shines. The community has bonded over shared struggles, planning a street party this summer to bid farewell together. 🎉👫
In the face of climate realities, moving isn’t just necessary; it’s life-saving. RCT’s intervention last year provided a glimmer of hope, and residents are keenly waiting for the ordeal to conclude. Paul expresses gratitude towards the council and neighbours for their support, hoping no one will remain in the vulnerable houses by autumn’s stormy spell. 🍂
Here’s to starting anew and ensuring safer living conditions for all at Clydach Terrace. 🌈🌿
