๐ก๐ Struggling to keep up with housing and job growth, Merthyr Tydfil’s local development plan (LDP) is falling short, according to a recent report. The plan, intended to boost new homes and employment opportunities, is not hitting its targets. With housing completions 30% below the desired level and only a fraction of allocated employment land being developed, there’s room for improvement.

The LDP, launched in 2016 and set to run until 2031, is now undergoing a major review due to a series of changes in local and national conditions since 2020. Despite recent census data showing stable population numbers extending into the future, the LDP needs a fresh approach to tackle current issues. ๐งโ๏ธ
Specific areas needing attention include housing delivery, employment provision, and renewable energy projects. These shortfalls raise questions about whether the current strategy aligns with real-world demands. Meanwhile, Merthyr Tydfil’s population is expected to grow slightly by 2042, meaning fresh strategies are needed to cater to future needs.

With only 827 homes delivered by April 2025, falling short of the 1,263 target, and just 0.6 hectares of employment land developed from an available 30 hectares, the urgency is palpable. Updates to the LDPโs vision and objectives are crucial, ensuring they’re in line with recent shifts in policy. ๐
