🏉 Exciting News for Welsh Rugby! 🌟
Big changes could be coming as the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) explores forming a new national side to bridge the gap between Under-20s and the senior team. Currently, they’re considering reviving the Wales A team or creating a new Under-23 team!
This initiative aims to fast-track player development, offering emerging talents a platform to showcase their skills at higher levels. Steve Tandy, Wales head coach, emphasises the benefits of such a team from his experience in Scotland, noting it accelerates growth and provides invaluable exposure.
“It’s about giving our upcoming stars a stage to shine! More games and higher competition levels will help us build depth and strength,” says Tandy. 🚀
The lack of matches for the Wales A team since 2003 is a missed opportunity to nurture talent. A revamped structure could have greatly benefited players like Sam Scott and Jordan Morris, offering them crucial experiences.
The impressive performances by the Wales U20s squad, including standout names like Steffan Emanuel and Tom Bowen, underline the importance of this potential addition. These rising stars need pathways to grow and stay competitive on the international stage.
Richard Whiffin, U20s head coach, highlights the need for such a setup: “We want our U20s players to continue developing at top levels wearing the red shirt.”
With substantial investments planned for this developmental pathway, it could be a game-changer for nurturing future rugby icons. 🏆
