Wales back-row James Botham is getting some cheeky banter from both his teammates and his famous granddad after a recent Six Nations hiccup. During Wales’ showdown with Scotland, a slip-up after a kick-off allowed Scotland’s Darcy Graham to score a crucial try, trimming down Wales’ lead and swinging the game Scotland’s way for a 26-23 victory.

Botham, grandson of cricket legend Ian Botham, is taking the jibes in good spirits. Returning to international rugby after a year, he’s laughing off the ribbing from teammates during training. “I’ve had it every day,” says Botham, nodding to his mates Daf and a few others. “It’s all part and parcel of being in this environment. We learn from it and move on.”

Even from the other side of the globe, Lord Botham couldn’t resist a little FaceTime to his grandson. James recounts, “I tried dodging the call, but when it finally came, I knew what was coming. He didn’t say much, just gave me that look and a smirk. But he was chuffed I was back on the field.”
Despite the slip, James reflects more on his journey back to the squad. After playing the early games under Warren Gatland’s leadership and then waiting nearly three years for another cap, this latest game marks his first start since last year’s Six Nations. He’s grateful for every bit of advice from his dad Liam, a former rugby standout himself, and his granddad. “They’ve always been straight with me, and that’s invaluable,” he notes.
This moment might have been a little stumbling block, but Botham is all about looking forward. His comeback journey highlights how persistence and maintaining club form can pave the way for such opportunities, and he’s determined to seize every chance that comes his way. Here’s to learning, laughter, and family wisdom in the world of sport!
