Imagine waking up to the sound of your front door being battered down! That’s exactly what happened to veteran journalist Martin Shipton and his wife Kay in Riverside, Cardiff. The couple was left “shell-shocked” after police conducted a dawn raid as part of an investigation into a Chinese spying scandal. Officers seized Martin’s phones, laptops, and even his daughter’s old cameras during the search.

Despite the dramatic entry, Martin, a seasoned journalist with the Western Mail and now associate editor at Nation Cymru, wasn’t arrested. The investigation also saw the arrest of David Taylor, husband of Scottish Labour MP Joani Reid, along with two others linked to Welsh Labour.

Kay described the raid as “very nasty” and suggested it might be a smear campaign against Martin, who was once named Journalist of the Year. Neighbours initially thought it was a drug bust due to the lengthy police presence.

This raid is part of a broader investigation into alleged Chinese interference in UK democracy. Police also searched properties in London, East Kilbride, and another in Cardiff, but Commander Helen Flanagan reassured that there’s no immediate threat from these arrests.
