A shocking incident in Pontardawe has left a rugby player nursing a broken cheek after a brutal assault with a metal pole. In a garden attack that left everyone stunned, David Haggerty targeted Lee Evans while he was simply relaxing on a deck chair. Words turned into a violent encounter when Haggerty, aged 48, retrieved a metal object from his car and repeatedly struck Evans.

Swansea Crown Court heard the disturbing details, with Haggerty spinning a “cock-and-bull story” of self-defence, later debunked by a jury. The aftermath for Mr Evans was severe, not just physically but emotionally too, as he has struggled with anxiety and panic attacks, and had to put his rugby game on hold.

Despite Haggerty’s claim of innocence, he was handed a prison sentence of 27 months for grievous bodily harm. Although sparing him from a conviction for the more serious offence of intent to cause harm, his previous record showed a history of offences, albeit non-violent until now. His defence spoke of personal hardships, including health struggles and the recent loss of his father.
Judge Paul Thomas KC highlighted Haggerty’s explosive temper, noting how he resorted to violence quickly and then concocted a false narrative to avoid consequences. The defendant even persuaded his wife to give false testimony in court, a move that didn’t sway the jury.
Alongside his prison term, Haggerty faces a four-year restraining order, ensuring he stays away from his victim. It’s a stark reminder of how temper and violence can shatter lives and bring severe legal repercussions. Stay safe and stay strong! 🏉💪
