🌿 Overgrown Mystery in the Heart of Swansea 🌿

Right in the middle of Swansea lies Bethel Sketty Cemetery, a historical resting place that’s seen better days. Beneath its brambles and overgrown grasses lie over 11,000 souls, including notable figures such as the missionary Griffith John and soldier James Owen, aka David Lewis. But fret not, change could be on the horizon!

A passionate group called Friends of Bethel Sketty Cemetery is stepping up, eager to restore and maintain this neglected gem. With over 19 dedicated volunteers ready to roll up their sleeves, they hope to transform the four-acre site between Carnglas Road and Prospect Place into a respectful and tranquil space once more. Their ultimate goal? To take over the cemetery via a charitable trust, with hopes of acquiring ownership in the future.
The cemetery, part of the Al-Khoei Benevolent Foundation’s estate, has seen little TLC, with only two grass cuts in three years! The foundation recently bought the adjoining Bethel Chapel and plans to turn it into a youth activity and education centre, alongside a space for Islamic teachings. This decision hasn’t come without controversy – 118 objections were raised – but progress lingers on.
Recent meetings between Friends of Bethel Sketty Cemetery and the foundation hint at future collaboration. Fiona Nixon, the acting chairwoman, shared how the local community has generously supported their maintenance efforts, contributing significantly towards upkeep costs. Yet, more love and care are needed to preserve what’s left.
Does Swansea’s historic site deserve a new chapter? With community backing, it just might get one. Let’s keep the memory alive and transform Bethel Sketty Cemetery with some community spirit and dedication! 💪✨
