Heads up, Vale of Glamorgan residents! The council has approved a 6.5% hike in council tax, marking it as one of the biggest increases in Wales. This change will see Band D households paying an extra £2.07 a week. While 5.5% of the rise is the base increase, an extra 1% is earmarked for boosting youth services and improving rural bus links, raising an additional £1.07m.

Council leader Lis Burnett highlighted that this budget is a unique opportunity to invest rather than cut back after over a decade, maintaining their status as a low council tax authority. However, not everyone is on board. Conservative leader, Cllr George Carroll, slammed the rise as “inflation-busting,” suggesting that it reflects mismanagement. Plaid Cymru’s Dr Ian Johnson agreed, saying it didn’t strike the right chord in these challenging times, and was significantly above inflation.

With an eye on stretched household budgets, Cllr Stephen Haines expressed concerns about this added financial strain. Meanwhile, Cllr Ewan Goodjohn emphasised the importance of investing in the future of local youth. The vote saw some division: 49% in favour, 42% against, and 9% abstaining.
